CCM Totem-Pole PFC Analog Controller IC

Inventchip Technology Co., Ltd. (IVCT), today announced that it is shipping CCM totem-pole PFC analog controller IC IVCC1102 engineering samples and will release the product to the market by Q1 2022. The controller is the industry’s first analog IC with full CCM totem-pole control functions and in a 16-pin package. The IVCC1102 is available with SOIC-16L and 4x4mm QFN-20L packages.

The release of IVCC1102 enhanced the strategy of IVCT dedicating to be a Turn-key solution supplier of SiC discrete diodes and surrounding IC applications. And meanwhile IVCC1102 can work with 650V SiC MOSFET and assorted NextDrive TM Gate driver together to provide total solution for Power supply of High performance communication, date center and severs, which supporting China’s energy-saving and emission-reduction policy. In addition, the advanced character and initiative of IVCC1102 has demonstrated strong ability of technical development and innovation of Inventchip Technology.

With the emergence of wide-bandgap devices, SiC MOSFETs and GaN HEMTs, the totem-pole topology becomes a valid and popular circuit for a PFC to operate at continuous conduction mode (CCM) with very little or no switching loss caused by the transistor’s body diode reverse recovery. The topology is simple and highly efficient. It is the best known topology for Platinum and Titanium-level power supply designs.

Due to the control complexity, digital controllers were the only available solution for this application. However, for some special cases, such as AC line drop and lightning surge, it is still difficult for them to prevent the inductor current reversing and maintain a correct control logic. Furthermore, digital control requires highly-skilled software and hardware engineers to implement all the necessary control functions. The development effort and time are significant. With IVCT’s patented technologies, the IVCC1102 could not only lower the cost and shorten the development cycle, but also improve system performance and solve the following design challenges:

Typical Application Diagram

1) A totem-pole PFC with AC input rectifier MOSFETs is essentially a bidirectional converter. Vac dropping abruptly can cause the boost inductor’s voltage-second to lose balance and generate a larger reverse current, which not just discharges the PFC output capacitors and reduces hold-up time, but could damage the switching devices also.

The IVCC1102, with a patented built-in fixed-ratio duty-cycle feedforward control, is able to track the AC input instantaneous voltage and generate a precise PWM signal to avoid this problem.

2) The IVCC1102 employs a patented AC current crossover control scheme by softly ramping up the PWM duty cycle at a higher switching frequency during the AC crossover area to achieve an excellent current waveform.

3) AC voltage surge and lightning strike is one of the most challenging tests for a totem-pole PFC. Equipped with a fast analog Vac crossover detection circuit, the IVCC1102 can reliably detect the input voltage polarities and maintain a correct control logic to avoid circuit damage.    

4) To achieve a low THD, the IVCC1102 utilizes a patented track-and-hold output voltage sensing to reject second harmonic inference and achieve an excellent THD. At load transient, the tack-and-hold circuit is bypassed and non-linear loop control circuit is used instead to speed up the voltage loop and reduce the PFC output voltage dip.
